The EkoHacks Course: Build the Observatory

What your seat includes

Taught live in a small group, remote over video or in person in Alexandroupolis, inside EkoFlow, our open source development environment.

• Thirteen teaching weeks, weekdays 9 to 5, from 16 November to 26 February with a two week Christmas break
• A working day, never a classroom: standup at 9:15, tickets from a real board, pairing rotations, a Friday demo
• Taught mornings three times a week; the rest of the day is shipping, with pull request review the way a strong team does it
• One real product built test first, with no mock anywhere: the Greek housing observatory
• Your own fork with every pull request you merged through the gate, a portfolio of how you work, and the belt you earned in the dojo beside it
• A certificate of completion naming the four capabilities
• The Solo plan on this platform, yours forever

Coming to Alexandroupolis

Alexandroupolis has an airport with daily flights to Athens, daily buses from Istanbul, and good roads from Kardzhali, Haskovo and Svilengrad. A room in town is modest, and we help you find one; ask when you book. If you need a Schengen visa, the invitation letter comes with your booking. If a visa makes thirteen weeks in Greece too many, take the first module remote and the rest in Alexandroupolis; write to us and we will arrange it.

Each stage is built around doing the work, with a facilitator who asks rather than lectures. Read about how we teach

1. 1

   Module one, Seeing: weeks 1 to 3

   A green test that lied to our faces. Tell a lying green from a truthful red, prove a wrapper against the real world once and switch the world off without faking your own code, configure every read and witness every write.

2. 2

   Module two, Withstanding: weeks 4 to 6

   A data service that has no API, serves spreadsheets from dated URLs and fails in every way. Build on your own wrappers, fail loudly instead of being quietly wrong, and state the laws a calculation must obey.

3. 3

   Module three, Building: weeks 7 to 9

   Storage that never destroys a fact, time you can command, a web edge you own end to end. The walking skeleton demonstrated as a whole system, every seam explained.

4. 4

   Module four, Teaching: weeks 10 to 13

   Ship it and keep it observable, choose and scope a story of your own, then demonstrate the work to an outside guest and teach the way to the next person.
